My Heart is Full - of Schitt
Schitt's Creek has been trending all over social media platforms, earning mentions on various newspapers, after sweeping nine, much deserved and earned, Emmys on Sunday night (this goes without saying that the Emmy's are not the only awards the show has won).
Casting, costumes, script, direction, character development - this Canadian production had the entire package, and humbly presented us a world I personally want to live in.
Without giving away too much, created by father and son Eugene and Daniel (Dan) Levy, the story follows the Roses; Johnny (Eugene Levy), Moira (Catherine O'Hara), David (Dan Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy), as they navigate through their new living adjustment in Schitt's Creek, a god forsaken town bought as a joke, but was the only asset left in their possession after the Government took hold of everything else.
Ok, let's all take a step back and re-read the synopsis. Imagine living in a world of glamour, riches, parties, comfort, luxory. All of a sudden, everything is taken away from you because you trusted the wrong people. The shame, the judgment, the feeling of abandonment when your so called friends failed to check-up on you. Suddenly you find yourself living a two room accomodation in a motel, separated by a thin wall. What would the world say?
Let me tell you what the people of Schitt's Creek said - nothing!
Dan presents us with this beautiful metaphor of life before and after Schitt's Creek.
Life before Schitt's Creek is not very different from the world we are living in. A world characterised by hate, bigotry, racism, judgement, discrimination, a world alienated by materialism and false images and gods. A world full of labels.
Dan stripped his world from all of that, in doing so, only love remained. Schitt's Creek is a celebration of love, unity, a town coming togther to rise above the challenges. It show us what the world would look like when LGTBQ relationships are normalised, everyone is accepted, love and creativity thrive, labels are ereased and social constructs are broken.

Dan and his team had us laughing at one point and bawling our eyes out the next. But most importantly, Schitt's Creek made us feel safe. It showcased queer love without trauma and shame. It showcased women and their success without harrassment. It showcased financial difficulties without mockery. It showed us a world where only wine matters and not its label. #intothewinenotthelabel #lovewins
From the friendships, to love and marriages, to learning to love oneself and the world loves you as you in return, Schitt's Creek is a town I dream of living in. Now more than ever, in a time where we all need to come together, we need productions like Schitt's Creek. If you have not watched it yet, please do! We've all got something to learn from this story.
If you need to escape the cruelty of this world, pour yourself a glass of fruit wine, grab yourself some mall pretzels and enchilhadas, and please ride along. Let Ronnie (Karen Robinson) embrace you with her dry wit, or sweet Twyla (Sarah Levy) going out of her way to ensure your happiness. Let Stevie (Emily Hempshire), Roland (Chris Elliot) and Jocelyn (Jennifer Robertson) teach you the meaning friendship. Allow Ted (Dustin Milligan) to guide you through a path of self love and worth. Let Patrick (Noah Reid) and his amazing voice show you what unconditional love is. And if you need a hopping entrance, call Bob (John Hemphill).
Schitt's Creek entered my life unexpectedly, and I am so glad it did. I decided to watch it during a period where mostly I recurred to material which grounded me; I recurred to what was familiar to me. Schitt's Creek was a pleasent saving grace for me and many others out there.
September marked a happy ending on many fronts for everyone involved. Thank you! Thank you Daniel and your team for creating a place safe for everyone who wants to seek refuge. Love that journey for you!

Loved this piece. Schitt's Creek has earned its place among comedy greats and I never expected to do so well when I watched it for the first time!
ReplyDeleteTbh I am not surprised it did so well. Granted being on Netflix helped with gaining a lot of attraction. But the series is just great :)
